Literacy Beyond Decoding

Reading Comprehension

Reading is more than sounding out words — it's about understanding, connecting, and thinking critically about what you read. Our tutors help students at every level become confident, engaged readers.

Why It Matters

Understanding What You Read

Depending on the student's grade level, ability, and tutor focus, our tutors will work with the student on reading comprehension.

Our structured approach addresses comprehension at every level, building the skills students need to succeed in school and beyond.

Our Approach

Six Pillars of Comprehension

01

Vocabulary Building

A strong vocabulary is the foundation of reading comprehension. We teach students to use context clues, word roots, and morphology to unlock the meaning of unfamiliar words.

02

Active Reading Strategies

Students may learn to annotate places in the text depending on the tutor and grade level. Higher-level students may be asked to predict and summarize as they read, turning passive reading into active reading.

03

Text Structure Awareness

Understanding how different texts are organized (narrative, expository, persuasive) helps students anticipate and extract key information more efficiently.

04

Inferencing & Critical Thinking

We guide students to read between the lines — drawing conclusions, making connections, and evaluating what they read with confidence.

05

Fluency Development

When decoding becomes automatic, cognitive resources are freed up for comprehension. Fluency practice is a core part of every session.

06

Background Knowledge

Comprehension depends heavily on what a reader already knows. We build schema through rich discussion and exposure to diverse texts across content areas.
